Viriditas
Opus Verbi viriditas/ The work of the Word is greenness - Hildegard of Bingen
Viriditas is a new group at St. Marks. It is based on one of the fundamental principles of Hildegard's worldview "viriditas" which means vitality, fecundity, lushness, verdure or growth.
Hildegard of Bingen (1098 -1179) was one of the "great creation-centred mystics of the West". This multi talented and prolific abbess of a Benedictine abbey was an influential preacher, healer, scientist, composer, theologian, artist and poet. She coined the term viriditas, or greening power, connecting it closely with creativity.
Hildegard used the term to describe the greening power of God, the animating life-force within all creation giving it life, moisture and vitality. Thus there is a sacramental quality to this greening life force because it calls us to discover God at work in all the world not reject anything as beyond the realm of God,s presence.
Our call becomes to allow our greenness to flourish. Greenness became not just a physical reality, but a spiritual one as well, something to be cultivated in both body and soul.
